We examined the association between dietary patterns and anaemia in older Chinese, and to assess whether biomarkers of serum magnesium, C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum ferritin can mediate these associations.
Univariate analysis revealed adverse prognostic factors: FHIT gene methylation (P = 0.028), poor performance status (I to IV, P = 0.002), anemia (< or =8.5 g/dL, P = 0.007), hypoalbuminemia (< or =3.5 g/dL, P < 0.002), high serum C-reactive protein levels (>0.5 mg/dL, P = 0.002), elevated beta-2-microglobulin serum levels (>6.5 mg/L, P < 0.001), and treatments not including autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (auto-PBSCT) (P = 0.007).
Secondary outcomes evaluate (i) Hb, Ferritin and CRP levels on Day 14, 28, (ii) anaemia symptoms on Day 0, 7, 14 and 28 using structured health related quality of life questionnaires, (iii) treatment safety by assessing adverse reactions and infection endpoints and (iv) the quantitative impact of anaemia on breast feeding quality using a hospital designed questionnaire.
Reduction of CRP from 1.7 [0.4-3.2] to 0.11 [0.05-0.5] mg/dL (p < 0.0001), ESR from 33 [14.5-61] to 6 [2-12] mm/1st hour (p < 0.0001) and decrease in patients with anemia from 16.4% to 3.8% (p < 0.0001) were observed.
OBDM patients with or without anemia had higher levels of ferritin and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein than the Cn group. mRNA relative abundance of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells was elevated in OBDM with anemia, and mRNA expression of interleukin-6 and toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 was increased in OBDM group in basal high Fe and high glucose concentrations.
In addition, Ki67 proliferation greater than 50%, transformed tumor cells greater than 40%, elevated C-reactive protein level (CRP), anemia (< 11 g/dL) and thrombocytopenia (< 150 x 10(9)/L) predicts poorer OS for nasal disease.
In a recent US-based nationwide registry study, about 10% of all hospitalized ischemic stroke patients had comorbid cancer, with a slight rise in this rate over the last decade.<sup>2</sup> Stroke patients diagnosed with occult cancer are usually older with men being at a higher risk of having comorbid cancer.<sup>3,4</sup> In addition, probability of cancer diagnosis after stroke is associated with smoking, elevated D-dimer, elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), and anemia on admission.
If anemia was combined with high C-reactive protein (CRP) and high B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) was added the HR (95%CI) was slightly higher (5.81 (4.73-7.14)) even after adjusting for age, sex and comorbidities.

Compared with EMAST-negative patients, EMAST-positive patients were older (median age 77 vs. 69 years; p < 0.001), leaner (median weight 67.5 vs. 77 kg; p = 0.001), had significantly higher rates of hypoalbuminemia (24% vs. 6%; OR 2.3, 95% CI 1.5-3.6; p = 0.002) and anemia (45% vs. 20%; OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.6-6.8; p = 0.001), and had elevated preoperative C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (51% vs. 34%; OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.0-3.9; p = 0.046).
Children with X-CGD at an acute infection stage showed three recurrent signs in terms of serum biomarkers: (1) the total number of white blood cells (especially N%) was increased significantly, accompanied by anemia in some cases; (2) C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were increased significantly; and (3) most of the patients exhibited very high serum IgG levels (>12 g/L).

Cases of moderate to severe microcytosis and anaemia with no obvious cause and normal C-reactive protein, HbA<sub>2</sub> and tissue transglutaminase antibody levels (n = 550) were put on a trial of oral iron for 4 weeks.

A score (0-3) was derived on the presence of anaemia (Hb < 120 g/l for women and < 130 g/l for men), raised CRP (> 10 mg/ml) and low albumin (< 35 g/dl).
A 41-year-old man was referred to our hospital for the evaluation of hypergammaglobulinemia (IgG 2898 mg/dL and IgA 587 mg/dL), inflammation (CRP 6.7 mg/dL and serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) 15.1 ng/L), and anemia (Hb 10.9 mg/dL).
